I should find a morello linux img file in build/tmp-soc/deploy/images/morello-soc but... it's not there. Been trying to find out why... so far no luck:

I’ve not looked in any detail at the morello layer, but:
599M usb-image-morello-soc-20230517084210.rootfs.wic
That looks like the disk image (wic is the tool that constructs disk images from filesystems), so just dd that to a (virtual or physical) USB stick and it should boot.

Thank you for pointing this out, we will update the blogpost, however the article should not be treated as a manual. That branch had quite a few updates since the article was written.
The only official manual is within the README.md files [1] [2]
As Ross pointed out, indeed *.wic files are the usb disk image, so please do use the usb-image-morello-soc.wic

Ooooh. I've never encountered wic before. 600M or so didn't seem big enough for a real disk image so I didn't even look into it. I was looking for something with like 1-2GB+.

The readme was a bit ... sparse. :) I noticed the updates - there is now a 1.6 release too.
